A tech engineer who loses their contract at a start-up near the TU Delft campus wonders how quickly the first WW payments will reach their account. As of 1 July 2026 the Unemployment Benefits Act (WW) will undergo far-reaching changes, with reduced administration and faster payments as the main benefits.
Day-wage calculation becomes more transparent
The day wage, which forms the basis of the monthly benefit, will henceforth be determined on the basis of the average of the last twelve months. The previous complexity surrounding holiday allowances, bonuses and seasonal adjustments will disappear. In concrete terms:
- Holiday allowance is included automatically
- One-off bonuses are spread over twelve months
- The maximum day wage rises to € 287.50
- No separate formula for seasonal workers
Faster first payment
Through direct linkage with payroll reporting systems the UWV will pay the first benefit within two weeks instead of four to eight weeks. This prevents acute financial hardship, particularly for international staff around TU Delft who often lack a substantial safety net.
More flexible earnings limit
The strict deduction rule for additional earnings is relaxed. Up to 40 per cent of the previous wage may be earned on the side without full deduction; only the excess is deducted. This lowers the threshold for taking up part-time work, for example as a bicycle courier along the Delftse Schie.
Adjusted obligation to apply for jobs
Employees over sixty with thirty years of employment history need to apply for jobs less frequently. Greater emphasis will be placed on coaching and retraining. The UWV will draw up a personal plan together with the individual concerned.
Elements that remain unchanged
The duration of the benefit continues to depend on the employment history: three to a maximum of 24 months. In the event of summary dismissal the court still assesses culpability. Such cases are brought before the Rechtbank Den Haag.
Steps for employers
- Check whether the HR system is ready for the new UWV linkage
- Have settlement agreements containing WW clauses reviewed by a specialist
- Inform staff in good time about the new possibilities for additional earnings
